Mark on Latin American leaders assail U.S. drug ‘market’: Seems like "regulatory options" would be the code for decriminalization but in any case what other option besides decrim would there be? Seems like the market option is working right now to send boatloads of cash to the criminals.
z-reserve on EXCUSE ME! Congressman “Freedom” How Many Times Did You Vote FOR The Patriot Act?: This must be that Diet Ideology thing : all the rhetorics, none of that pesky thinking.
That said, me makes good points about government intervention within our daily lives.
And that Obamacare thing was so watered down to please the Republicans either in House and Congress to make much of a change (though i'm sure it makes a change for the people eligible to it), I'm sure it helps them more than the Democrats; it became one of their campaign tools.
matt w. on Your Phone Loses Value Pretty Fast (Unless It’s an iPhone): The market is the only reliable (i.e., real) way to determine value. Duh. That's how we can tell how valuable CEO's and hedge fund managers are. And cocaine-way more expensive than flour.
Desiato on Geoffrey R. Stone: Is Money Speech?: As I said, I'm completely in favor of encouraging people to be independent and critical thinkers. It'd be great if people, especially kids, learned how they're being manipulated by advertising.
BUT that's separate from the fact that I think advertisers have an incentive to continually find new ways to influence people. They'll adapt.
A more interesting question to me is whether (& what) regulation is compatible with the First Amendment. There's an expectation in the U.S. that each voter get a roughly equal vote, but not (yet) that each citizen get roughly equal means to speech.
